Purpose

The main objective is to develop a Monitoring and Alert System to detect Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB) as early warning method of red tide episodes. The project proposes reaching this objective by using Artificial Intelligence techniques, a distributed environmental sensor network, circulation models and data from the MERIS Envisat satellite:

  • Advanced Artificial Intelligence techniques (GAMs, neural networks and fuzzy logic) to enable work with a large number of variables and data in real time.
  • Multiparameter Sensor Platforms (hyperspectral optical technology), to measure a wide range of environmental parameters and optical water properties, with the highest possible temporal and spectral resolution.
  • Information and Communication Architecture convergent with Future Internet and next generation networks, sensor node IP connectivity in WSN networks (IPv6/6LoWPAN).
  • WOA (Web Oriented Architecture) in combination with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

This tool will complement existing control networks and analytical methods (laboratory), offering a more advanced detail level on this phenomenon in real time, contemplating the following features and specifications:

  • EARLY PREDICTION: at least 1 week in advance.
  • ADVANCED SENSORS: wide range of environmental parameters, satellite data and optical water properties.
  • UBIQUITOUS, REAL-TIME REMOTE ACCESS by Internet.
  • USER INTERFACE and SERVICES ARCHITECTURE based on WEB.
  • EASY TO INSTALL, MANAGEMENT and MAINTENANCE.
  • SCALABILITY and MODULARITY to other geographical areas, easy of adding new variables and new information sources, external databases, etc.
  • NETWORK AND DATA CONVERGENCE, design is carried out based on Future Internet standards
